Though, I feel that there's two sides to poverty. THe first, of course is the bad side. Walking along the streets of mumbai, you see people sitting with thwir heads in their hand probably starving becasue their last meal was a few days ago. Some of them just sit on the street and beg becasue they havent enough energy. But some of them try to be helpful. As we were leaving Mumbai, we saw this boy and he came up to us. He kept trying to help us out with the taxi. We were all a little weary at first. However, he was just trying to do something to help with all that he had (which wasnt very much). He checked that the tyres were ok, that my door was locked and he told me to wind up my window becasue it wasnt safe! Maybe he was trying to pickpocket us? who knows? But I gave him 20rupees because I saw some kindness in his eyes :)
Which leads me to the other side of poverty. It was so amazing to see entire families on the streets of mumbai all huddled up together at night with their mothers fanning and singing their children to sleep. The fathers sit up and keep watch so that no harm comes their way. They eat together (when they can), they play together and do everything togther.
Yeekiat asked me the other day, "Why do these people even want to live if life is that horrible?".
"For their children. So they can have a better life" I answered.
It made me miss everyone at home! Family is important huh?
Love,
val :)
PS- Ok, sandstorm over, time for some dinner! Leaving for Jaisalmer later. EXCITING!
